Welcome to "Bergsmansafton" via Teams with Sridhar Seetharaman who is Professor and Department Chair for Materials Science and Engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, United States of America (USA).
At this evening's presentation, titled “Pathways for Steel Decarbonisation - A Comparative Study and A Few Case Studies from a US Perspective”, Sridhar will share insights from fieldwork on LCA based assessment of the competitiveness of decarbonisation in steel sheet production compared to alternative materials such as aluminium and reinforced polymer composites for the automotive industry.
This will be a joint event between the Swedish and Finnish Metal & Mining Associations (SBF and VMY).
Time: March 3, 2026 at 6:30-8:00 PM.
Venue: Digital (Teams)
Language: English
If various regions around the world implement carbon taxes (or credits for carbon avoidance or mitigation), we assert that the competitiveness of steel products in the marketplace will shift according to individual manufacturers’ ability to control CO2 emissions as measured by cradle-to-gate Life Cycle Analysis (LCA). The talk discusses the future costs scenarios based on carbon taxes and hydrogen cost for the case study of producing automotive sheet. The pathways to decarbonize steel in comparison to alternative materials such as aluminium and reinforced polymer composites were evaluated. Normalized global warming potential (nGWP) estimates were calculated assuming inputs from the current USA electricity grid, and a hypothetical renewable-based grid. From the cost point of view, the current cheapest decarbonized production routes are identified and some ongoing research in USA is discussed.
