At today’s digital seminar, Husamuddin Ahmadzai, will address “Extraction of Mineral Resources in the Arctic and the Third Pole –Sustainability and Near term challenges from a Nordic Perspective”. The presentation will focus on extraction of mineral resources in the Arctic and parts the Third Pole. Experience from several field projects, covering exploration, feasibilities, mining, beneficiation, extraction, ancillaries, remediation, and financing, provide an insight to the Nordic cooperative work towards sustainability and near term challenges. The presentation addresses green- and brownfield projects in the Euro-Asian Arctic and the Tethyan Belt area around the Balochistan-Helmand-Sistan Basin that receives run-off from the Hindukush region of the Third Pole.
The Arctic and Third Pole regions are undergoing significant changes in land and sea use, fishing, forestry, transportation, freshwater diversion, urbanisation, and more. The regions house 22 of the planets 67 Large Marine Ecosystems, substantial amounts of energy resources including oil, gas, and critically required materials. The regions generate considerable material wealth but also face unprecedented change with opportunities for improvement. Key opportunities for sustainable exploitation relate to the mining and extractive sector including associated on- and off-shore infrastructure in sensitive eco-systems. The Arctic region is warming four times faster than the rest of the planet and an intensive exploitation of its mineral wealth, fish stocks, and strategic military location has resulted in numerous hotspots.
In the regulatory and incentives spheres, the European Union and the Nordics countries are moving ahead to embrace some of the world leading initiative such as the “Green Deal”. Similarly, Canada, Russia and the US are adjusting their regulatory framework to tackle the rapidly changing arena.
BIO: Husamuddin started his career with the Resource Development Corporation for beneficiation and metallurgical work on the Saindak Porphyry bodies in the Tethyan belt. This was followed by several years of research and development at the University of New South Wales and the Royal Institute of Technology in hydro- and pyro-metallurgical processing of copper, and sulphur controls of high temperature metallurgical processes. He joined the Swedish EPA in 1987 with responsibilities for the mineral, mining, and metallurgical industries, and phasing out of ozone depleting substances (ODS) in the chemical and engineering sectors. Early 1990s onwards saw him engaged as a special adviser, environment and technology, to the Nordic Finance Group (NEFCO, NIB), and as a partner in his own consultancy in the field.
