At today's digital seminar, Marcus Bleasdale CMG, Managing Director of Wilstar Impact Investing AS and Director of Sustainability, Awilhelmsen AS, Norway, will explore how the extraction and trade of tin, tantalum, tungsten, gold, their ores, and concentrates—collectively defined as “conflict minerals” —fuel cycles of violence that reverberate through communities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Central African Republic (CAR). Through original photojournalism and Marcus's testimony, we trace a human story that stretches from remote artisanal mine sites to regional militia strongholds and, ultimately, to the global supply chains that end in our everyday electronics.
BIO: Marcus Bleasdale CMG is the Managing Director of Wilstar Impact Investing AS, an impact-first investment platform and Wilstar Innovate AS, a finance-first platform. He is also the Director of Sustainability for Awilhelmsen AS. Marcus works at building understanding around climate challenges and innovative solutions for a better world for multi-generational families. Marcus was appointed to the Order of St. Michael and St. George by King Charles III in the 2023 birthday honours list.
Marcus is also one of the world's leading documentary photographers and a contributing photographer for National Geographic Magazine. He uses his work to influence decision-makers and policymakers around the world. His work on human rights and conflict has been shown in the US Senate, the US House of Representatives, the United Nations, the Houses of Parliament in the UK, and the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
He has published three books, "One Hundred Years of Darkness" 2002 and "The Rape of a Nation" 2009, and “The Unravelling” 2015.
Marcus holds a bachelor’s degree in business and finance and a Master’s Degree in International Relations from the University of Cambridge.
