Björkdalsgruvan has a long history and has had several owners since its start in 1988 as a green-field project. The last change in ownership was August 5th this year when the previous owner Mandalay Resources (Canada) merged with Alkane Resources (Australia) to form a joint company trading under the name of Alkane Resources.

The Björkdal deposit outside Skellefteå was the first of its kind discovered in Sweden. It’s best described as a free-milling gold deposit with native gold and gold associated to pyrite.
Åsa will give an overview of the geology in the area and the various interpretations over the years. The mineralogy forces the mine to use advanced levels of grade control, and especially the vein mining in the underground part of the mine is challenging. This also has implications for the concentrator flowsheet. Future challenges regarding life-of-mine, mine and concentrator developments and permits will be included.

BIO: Åsa Corin has a M.Sc. in Geology 2005 from Åbo Akademi, Finland. After graduation she worked at various gold mining projects in Sweden, Finland, Australia and then Sweden again. She joined Björkdalsgruvan in 2015 as an Underground Geology Manager, became Geology manager 2018 and is from November 2023 General Manager.
