Welcome to "Bergsmansafton" via Teams with Jean-Pierre Birat who is a prominent French metallurgical engineer and consultant who has significantly influenced sustainable steelmaking and industrial ecology.
Amongst his extensive professional experiences Jean-Pierre Birat has led the Ultra-Low CO2 Steelmaking (ULCOS) program for 15 years, a major European initiative to reduce the carbon footprint of the steel industry with participation  also from the Scandinavian plants.

At this evening's presentation, titled  `Decarbonisation of the steel sector´, Jean-Pierre will share insights from his works in the field.
This will be a joint event between the Swedish and Finnish Metal & Mining Associations (SBF and VMY).

BIO: 
Professional Career & Leadership
     •    IF Steelman: He is the founder and CEO of IF Steelman (established 2015), a consultancy focused on net-zero industrial solutions, materials technology, and the societal impacts of metallurgy.

     •    ESTEP: He served as the Secretary General of the European Steel Technology Platform (ESTEP) from 2013 to 2015.

     •    ArcelorMittal: Birat spent 42 years at ArcelorMittal (formerly IRSID), where he was a world-renowned expert in process engineering and environmental metallurgy.

     •    ULCOS Program: He led the Ultra-Low CO2 Steelmaking (ULCOS) program for 15 years, a major European initiative to reduce the carbon footprint of the steel industry.

Academic & Research Focus
Birat’s work bridges the gap between technical engineering and social sciences. His primary areas of expertise include: 
     •    Sustainable Metallurgy: Developing low-carbon routes for steel production, including hydrogen-based steelmaking.

     •    Life Cycle Analysis (LCA): Expanding LCA methodologies to incorporate "Social Science and Humanities" (SSH) and Actor-Network Theory (ANT).

     •    Education: He is a visiting professor at the University of Science and Technology Beijing and has taught graduate-level courses at the SJTU-ParisTech Elite Institute of Technology in Shanghai. 

Honors & Education
     •    Education: Trained at the École des Mines de Paris and the University of California, Berkeley.

     •    Awards: Recipient of the Bessemer Gold Medal (2003) and the Prix Montgolfier (2006).
