Presentation title:
Forging the future – SSAB´s new Steel plant in Luleå.
SSAB is investing EUR 4.5 billion in Luleå to build a modern, electrified steel mill capable of delivering advanced products with significantly lower climate impact. The new technology enables both lower production costs and near fossil-free steelmaking, strengthening SSAB’s competitiveness while helping reduce Sweden’s total carbon dioxide emissions by seven percent.
During this session, Carl Orrling will present SSAB’s landmark transformation of the Luleå steel plant. The presentation will focus on the strategic, technical, and industrial journey behind the transition from traditional blast-furnace production to a new state-of-the-art steel plant, forming a cornerstone of SSAB’s ambition to lead the shift toward fossil-free steelmaking. Participants will gain insights into technology choices, implementation challenges, sustainability impacts, and the broader significance for Nordic and European industry.
This is a joint event organized by the Swedish and Finnish Metal & Mining Associations (SBF and VMY).
Date & time: April 29, 2026, 13.00–14:30.
