Presentation: “The Green Steel Revolution – 10 Years in the Making, and Now”
Dr. Sara Hornby will introduce the steel industry's challenges and, hence, the "the green steel movement". The original anticipated solution and today's reality will be discussed. Much research is underway (TRL 3 to 7) with many questions still to answer such as timeliness to market and commercial viability. After reviewing briefly these technologies, a look at the world and possible future for iron and steelmaking technologies, decoupling or not, and achieving the 1.5°C global warming will be discussed.
With more than three decades of international experience, Dr. Hornby has held leading technical and strategic roles with organizations such as British Steel, Air?Liquide, Midrex, Linde, Tenova, and others. She is the founder of Global Strategic Solutions Inc. and is widely recognized for her expertise in EAF steelmaking optimization and advanced process technologies.
Dr. Hornby holds five patents and has authored more than 140 international papers, seminars, and courses. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IoM3) and a recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the IoM3 Hadfield Medal, the Benjamin Fairless Award, the AIST/TMS John F. Elliott Lecturer Award (2024), and an Honorary Doctorate in Engineering from Sheffield Hallam University.
