Hydrogen in the Steel Industry – Reality or Wishful Thinking?

In 2021, Joachim von Schéele delivered a highly appreciated presentation for SBF on the use of hydrogen in the steel industry as a means of reducing carbon emissions. In late 2024 he returned discussing the development and expectations. Since then, numerous additional projects have been launched around the world with the ambition of using hydrogen for iron ore reduction and replacing fossil fuels in reheat furnaces. But at the same time, it seems, skepticism has increased as well.

In this presentation, Joachim will provide the background, facts, and figures behind the ongoing hydrogen transition. He will discuss the key challenges and opportunities associated with an increased use of hydrogen in iron and steel production and offer insights into whether hydrogen is on track to become a transformative solution for the industry or if expectations have outpaced reality.

This is a joint event organized by the Swedish and Finnish Metal & Mining Associations (SBF and VMY).

About the speaker
Joachim von Schéele has more than three decades of experience working with process industries, primarily in steel, metals, and minerals production, but also with the glass, automotive and chemical sectors.

Combining a background in metallurgical research and industrial consulting, Joachim joined the industrial gases industry in 1996. Since then, he has held a variety of technical, commercial, and management positions at AGA, BOC, and Linde, and has conducted business in more than 40 countries worldwide. For a decade he was based in India and China, and since 2020 he is based in Munich.

Today, Joachim focuses on decarbonization and the application of hydrogen technologies. He is actively engaged in advancing sustainability initiatives and supporting steel, metals, mining, and other hard-to-abate industries in achieving measurable progress toward their climate and business objectives.
