Bergsmansafton 30/9 om Blykalla and development of special steel

A warm welcome to a “Bergsmansafton”, featuring Peter Szakalos, CRO and co-founder of Blykalla AB. In his presentation, Peter will discuss Blykalla and its development of next-generation lead-cooled, sustainable nuclear reactors. He will also speak about steel research and new findings regarding corrosion processes in molten lead.

To begin with, Peter will speak about Blykalla, a company developing and building lead-cooled small modular reactors (SMRs) to provide safe, scalable, and carbon-free baseload power. Blykalla is advancing cutting-edge research toward industrialization and collaborating with global companies and partners—such as Oklo (USA), Uniper, and ABB—to deliver the first research reactor, which is set to achieve criticality in either Idaho or Texas (TBD).

Peter will also discuss the development of three new steels: a lean FeCrAl steel (AFF), a lean AFA steel (alumina-forming austenitic steel), and an alumina-forming martensitic steel (AFM). Alleima/Kanthal AB and Höganäs have already produced them on an industrial scale. AFF has set an unofficial world record for corrosion resistance in molten lead at temperatures up to 900°C. New steels and materials will be required to realize revolutionary innovations such as Generation IV nuclear power, fusion energy, concentrated solar power (CSP), and efficient green energy storage. During his presentation, Peter will discuss the exciting development of these new corrosion-resistant steels and illustrate the research with new findings regarding an unusual corrosion mechanism specific to austenitic steels exposed to lead at high temperatures.

BIO:
Peter Szakalos holds an industrial PhD in corrosion science from KTH (2004). He has led a research group at KTH focused on developing steels with improved high-temperature corrosion resistance for thermal energy processes. Currently, Peter divides his time equally between supervising doctoral students at the KTH Department of Nuclear Engineering and working at Blykalla.
